Afghan Foreign Minister to Visit Darul Uloom: Amir Khan Muttaqi, the foreign minister of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, is on a seven-day visit to India this week. This is the first visit by an Afghan official to India since the Taliban came to power in 2021. On Friday, he met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Today, he will visit Darul Uloom in Deoband town, Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. This institution is a world-renowned Islamic educational center. Muttaqi will meet with clerics and students there. The Darul Uloom administration and security agencies are fully prepared for his visit.

The Relationship Between Deoband and the Taliban

Founded in 1866, Darul Uloom is considered a center of Deobandi Islamic ideology. Along with education, it also played a key role in India's freedom struggle. Its teachings have spread to many countries in South Asia, especially Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The Taliban and Deoband also have a long and historical relationship. The curriculum and ideology of Darul Uloom Haqqania, established in Pakistan in 1947, were inspired by this madrasa. It also played a role in the rise of the Afghan Taliban.

Muttaqi's purpose for the visit

Speaking to the media, Muttaqi said, "Deoband is a major center of the Islamic world. Afghan scholars and Deoband have a long-standing relationship. It is a spiritual center. We want our students to come and study here."

Visit preparations

Darul Uloom Vice Chancellor Maulana Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani stated that the institution's doors are open to all and they will be welcomed. Muttaqi will meet with Darul Uloom scholars and address students. The entire Deoband area has been decorated, and security has been tightened.
